Birds love a tasty peanut snack, especially during the cold winter months when there might not be as much other food available for them. They're also great during the summer, when there are more birds. Your normal wire mesh bird feeder is an ideal means to give them a treat, but there are a few things you need to be careful of.
The nuts need to be kept behind a mesh smaller than they are, since a full sized peanut is likely to choke a hungry bird who tries to swallow it whole. Peanut feeders are the perfect way to supply the birds with nuts, forcing the birds to break up the nuts to eat, but to start out with, only fill it halfway as it will take the local bird flocks time to figure out there's a new food source available.
Keep in mind that peanuts may only last for three weeks to a month (and be sure to check you are using high quality peanuts, since cheap nuts may contain toxic elements). Take a look at your feeder, checking for mould.
Cats and similar hunters love birds as much as birds love peanuts, so situate the feeder in a place where the feathered visitors can't be approached easily – alone on a post, or nestled among leaves up a tree.
Once or twice a season, clean the feeder thoroughly using gloves and strong cleaning fluid, since they may accumulate parasites and diseases from the birds, which may spread to other birds. Clear up any rubbish or droppings around the feeder too.
Enjoy your garden!
