The Irish weather can take a brutal toll on our expensive and cherished garden furniture, so it only makes good sense to protect that investment and ensure the furniture lasts a long time. It's certainly cheaper than buying new furniture!
There's an old saying in Ireland – we get all four seasons in the one day, and there's a lot of truth in that. This can have a very eroding effect on garden furniture. We can get over a meter of rain in some parts of the country, and that's before you consider the highs and lows of the temperature, the effect of our sunshine and the development of mould.
So covering that furniture when it's not in use isn't much of an extra effort, particularly during the colder and wetter seasons when it wouldn't be in much use anyway. The best furniture cover is made from polyester, which allows air to pass in and out, thus preventing moisture buildup and condensation, but there are less expensive options made out of polyethylene.
Needless to say, any item which can be damaged by the weather and isn't stored indoors should also be covered, like metal garden fixtures, bicycles, power tools and more.
Enjoy your garden!
