While there's a big push to scarify, aerate and generally let your lawns breathe, this can bring its own complications in that you're often left with a lumpy lawn, which is unpleasant to walk on and even lie on if you want to take the sunshine!
Lawn rollers are employed when the soil goes in to begin with and afterwards as well, since growth, rain, temperature changes and many other factors can cause the soil surface to become uneven. The first thing to do before rolling out the roller, is to rake the lawn and pull up any rocks that might have emerged.
The rolling should take place after sowing and settling, if you're doing it for a new lawn. Make sure you do this on a dry day or you'll have a “wave” of mud building up in front of your roller, and might find yourself descending into the soil as you go!
The real success story of lawn roller however is to flatten existing lawns, which will create that famous “two tone” effect you see in football stadiums and in fancy estates. Just push the roller in one direction to get one colour, then back the other way to get the other! It might be a good idea to mark out the lines with string to make sure you don't go astray, especially if you're making lines wider than the roller.
Enjoy your garden!
