Choosing the right garden furniture can be a tricky task. It's the kind of thing that will be around for years to come, so it's best to choose something hard wearing – but be careful, because appearances can be deceiving!
Your furniture needs to fit well into your garden, so measuring the space you have and the space any furniture pieces will take up is a key step when choosing garden furniture. Ask yourself – what do I need? Will I be hosting garden parties or do I just want a small lounger to soak up the sunshine while I enjoy a nice book?
Even if a piece of furniture looks great, it might cramp your garden space if it's too big, so bring the measuring tape!
Irish weather is notoriously random, with extremes of heat and cold sometimes even on the same day, so your furniture will need to be able to withstand that. Wood can warp, metal can rust, fabrics can rot and the sunshine brings its own headaches.
Good hardwood furniture is ideal especially if treated with teak or linseed oil and washed down once or twice a year with a brush and soapy water. Even hardwoods can change colour over time if left unprotected, which is something to keep in mind.
Plastic furniture has the benefit of being lightweight, as well as being cheap and tough, but ensure it's rated for outdoor use, since the sunshine will fade and crack plastic before too long. Indorr storage during the winter is desirable.
Metal furniture has the best of all worlds, being lighter and cheaper than wood and stronger than plastic, but rust is always a concern. Spraying metal components with a sealant or matt glaze spray will help a lot, as will painting.
Enjoy your garden!
