Good tools cost money, but it's easy to see the difference between high quality and lower quality tools. In terms of endurance, reliability, and effectiveness, it's always a better idea to use the best tools you can afford. As such, it makes sense to take care of them properly, since well maintained tools will last a lifetime, which is also environmentally friendly!
It's important to clean your tools and try not to let moisture and muck hang around on them for too long. A strong bristled brush or rough cloth will get rid of most dirt and soil, and if you've got power tools, check the manuals for maintenance tips. Tighten screws and bolts as well.
Once they have dried off, if you aren't planning to use your tools for a while, a quick rubbing of olive oil, mineral oil or wax will ensure they stay rust free. Something like WD40 is also good, but it becomes less effective over time. An ideal wax for this is renaissance wax, which is used in museums. Stubborn rust spots can be removed with autosol or another car polisher.
Where you store your tools will make a big difference in how they perform down through the years. Making sure they're stored neatly and in an easy to reach location (while out of reach of children!) will help reduce wear and tear from rummaging around. A small shed or storage box will be very helpful.
It's vital to check wooden handles for splinters, and give them a rub with a bit of sandpaper if you spot any. Linseed or teak oil work well to help preserve wood from mould and other such issues.
As the saying goes, spend two hours sharpening and one hour cutting! There's no such thing as a tool that's too sharp, so try to keep cutting blades sharpened as per the manufacturer's instructions, whether that's on axes, secateurs, shears or trimmers.
Filters may need to be changes on some tools, connections tested for leaks, batteries recharged, oil replaced and so on.
Enjoy your garden!
