A chainsaw is a powerful and effective tool, perfect for cutting away dead branches, shaping trees or coppicing hedges. But because it's so powerful, it's also quite dangerous if not properly maintained, like all power tools, no matter how often you use them!
Check it visually first for dirt and oil buildup, loose nuts and bolts, cracks, signs of wear and damage. Wiping away dirt and dust is a good first step. Check the source of any oil leaks and make sure that you pick oil which is designed specifically for chainsaws to ensure smooth and long running.
Likewise the fuel for chainsaws isn't like normal car fuel, you need to select the correct mix. Now take a look at the most important operational part of the saw, the chain. This should be carefully oiled with the correct chain oil at the start of each sawing session.
Make sure the chain is tight and there is no give in it, not so much as a millimeter. If it's loose, a chainsaw spanner can be used to help tighten it to the sprocket. Be especially careful to inspect the safety devices like the chain break, the double switch on the handle, and that one won't work until the other is engaged.
Last but not least the filter needs to be cleaned and tested to make sure the saw doesn't overheat. This is one part of the saw that does tend to accumulate dust, dirt and grime, and it should be cleaned with compressed air.
Enjoy your garden!
