A good lawnmower is a great investment, but like any tool, especially powered ones, it will only last as long as it is well maintained. Properly cared for, a lawnmower will last a lifetime, so here are some ideas on how to do that properly.
There are few worse ideas than leaving a lawnmower sitting covered in grass cuttings and dirt for half the year, so make sure you clean the exterior thoroughly. Before you set to work though, pull out the spark plug with a wrench, and for larger lawnmowers, take out the battery too. These should be put somewhere dry and cool.
The cutting deck is the part above the blades, so clear that completely with a wire brush or whichever brush seems best fitted to the job. Deeply ingrained dirt may need a wooden stick to push out. Once it is clean, dry it off.
Oil should be rubbed into the blades and the blades themselves should be taken out and sharpened with a file or sharpening stone, but don't be afraid to call for help at your local garden centre or garage. After that's done, re attach the blades and keep the lawnmower somewhere dry until it is needed again.
Enjoy your garden!
