Between bouncing around under heavy loads and putting up with even heavier weather, the wheelbarrow is a sturdy and essential garden assistant in Ireland that deserves a little TLC from time to time!
They aren't the cheapest of garden tools either so it only makes good sense to maximise their lifespan and get the most out of them. When you're done using the wheelbarrow, scrub it thoroughly and clear out any residual dirt, dust or organic matter. All of these things will attract moisture and cause damage, which in turn leads to rust and corrosion setting in. Other substances like concrete are even worse, so take a wire brush and a hose and spend a few minutes getting that barrow sparkling.
Where you leave it at the end of the day (or between seasons) is also of crucial importance. Keeping it somewhere dry and cool is ideal, and removing moisture before storage will go a long way too. One of the most active components in the wheelbarrow are the wheels for which it is named, and they can be preserved by pumping them full of foam, making them much tougher.
A squirt of oil on all moving parts will keep the barrow working smoothly, tightening the nuts and other fixtures, and the oil can also be used to protect the wheelbarrow over the winter.
Enjoy your garden!
