Picking the Right Shed

While there are all kinds of sheds available, even special customised ones like eco sheds, pub sheds, she sheds and so on, most people with a garden only need a fairly straightforward shed. With that said the garden shed is a long term and costly part of our gardens and so should be chosen carefully.

The first and most important question to ask is what do you plan to use the shed for? Will it be actually work in, to store bikes, or just a closet to hang tools? After you have a giid idea how you plan to use your shed, you can start looking around for something of the correct shape and size.

Smaller sheds may cost less, but they might not be able to hold everything you need them to, and there's nothing worse than having a useless shed standing around. In general it's a good idea to get the largest shed you want and can afford, since they'll tend to get filled sooner rather than later.

Sheds are usually either metal or wood. While wood is usually cheaper and easier to install, it will need regular maintenance. A third option are plastic sheds, which need effectively no maintenance but some with their own environmental considerations too.

It might be a good idea to not get a shed with windows if you're going to be storing vehicles and expensive tools in there, and a lockable padlock bolt is a much better security solution for your garden shed than just a regular un of the mill padlock. Remember that your shed will still be there and more easily accessible than your house when you go on holidays!

Where you put the shed will be the next question – this will depend on the space you have to work with as well as how you mean to use the shed. If it's to store bicycles you should think about putting it facing the access round the side of the house or in a similar location. If it will be used mostly to store tools, it's a better idea to have it close to where you plan to work. Areas that are already shaded or otherwise hard to grow plants in are usually best.

Do try to fit your shed in with the rest of the garden, whether that means painting it, attaching a trellis to let plants grow, or many other strategies to enhance its appearance.

Enjoy your garden!
