Looking after plants can be a difficult and sometimes seemingly random job, for the less experienced gardener it's not always clear why one plant dies and another thrives! Potted plants in particular present unique challenges for budding gardeners.
Every type of plant has conditions and an environment that suit it best, whether we mean light, temperature, humidity or light. By picking the location correctly we can tilt the field in our favour even before the plant begins to grow, so it's always best to know what will make your types of plants happiest.
Make sure you look up the instructions for each plant, and if you can't supply a certain kind of environment, it might not be the best idea to buy that plant!
Keeping an eye on plants that have faded flowers, are starting to seed or are otherwise dying is a good idea too. This is called deadheading, and it just means snipping off the plant head.
Plants in pots and containers don't have access to the normal levels of water that outdoor plants get, so it's important to keep up a regular watering schedule, taking care not to drown them either. Puddling is usually a very bad thing. It's best to water when the day is cool to minimise evaporation, and when the year turns cold, there may be little need to water them at all.
Planning ahead can also pay off here – if you can't commit to regular watering, think about choosing plants which won't need it.
Potted or containerised plants need a lot of feeding, since they don't get the normal level of nutrients that outdoor plants receive, especially if they're closely planted. Feed them once every week or two with a suitable plant food. Liquid foods tend to be more convenient and so more likely to be used regularly.
Sometimes plants need a bigger pot, and this can be seen if they are starting to turn a bit wilted or faded. Lift the plant up a little and take a look at the roots, if they're packed in around the edges of the soil, you need to move the plant to a new pot.
