Roses are lovely when in bloom, but there's an unpleasant fungus which can attack them and spoil their delicate beauty. This is called Black Spot, or the technical term is Diplocarpon Rosae. No rose species have any resistance to this tough and determined fungus, so your roses will need to be treated every year to make sure they stay fresh.
The first thing you might notice would be brown spots on the leaves, then a yellowing followed by the foliage dropping off. The plant will sicken and never reach full bloom if this happens. The fungus likes damp weather and and warmth, and can move around when it rains.
Black spot dies off during the colder months, so you can control it by taking away leaves which have dropped, and anything that looks infected, towards the end of the year. Watering the flowers on the soil, not the leaves, early in the day will help with prevention too.
Leaving a bit of space between the plants is an excellent way to slow the spread of this disease, as is putting mulch around the base of rose plants.
