While vegetables are fairly straightforward to grow from seeds, flowering plants can be a bit trickier, often needing ideal conditions and months to germinate properly. It can be well worth the effort since there are an amazing variety of plants available fairly cheaply as seeds. Here are a few ideas about how to successfully turn seeds into beautiful flowers.
First of all, you have to pick which flowers you'd like to grow! There are so many that it's difficult to pick, but some of the more colourful varieties include sunflowers, sweet peas, marigolds, saxifrage and lavender.
Your flower selection should include a good variety of species to offer some variation in height and colour, although there's nothing wrong with a single type if that's your fancy! A greenhouse or bright, warm area in your house would be the best places to get the seeds started, since you can control those environments completely. A heated propagator may also be helpful.
Planting your seeds in watered compost in cell trays, follow the planting instructions for each flower type. Most flower seeds need light to germinate, so don't bury them completely, just press them onto the soil. You can spread vermiculite over the top to help to retain moisture, but only a very small amount.
Moisture is one of the key elements in getting flower seeds to germinate, so follow the instructions carefully.
Enjoy your garden!
