As the years tend to grow warmer in Ireland and we import things like food from distant countries, unfortunately there has been an increase in the kinds of insects we've never seen before, like mosquitoes and outsized spiders. They may have come from abroad but the winters aren't cold enough to eradicate them any more, so there are a few steps which can be taken to reduce their prevalence.
Standing water is the natural home of the mosquito, and that means things like water butts are a great place for them to breed and grow. Water butts are a fantastic idea – collect and harvest local rainwater for the plants, which is much healthier for your garden than tap water, and it saves on water use too. However it may attract problems like mosquitoes.
Covering the butt will prevent mosquitoes from getting in, or if they have got in, from getting out. Butts should be covered at all times to prevent insect infestation and to stop children falling into them. Linking pipes should also be kept an eye on.
Putting some vegetable oil over the top will also put a stop to mosquitoes for a while, since they can't get through the oil. If neither of these ideas seem to work, dropping in a few goldfish for a few hours will make short work of the bugs.
Enjoy your garden!
