As odd as it may seem, there's nothing so handy around the garden as the good old garden pallet. Having become quite the fashion item, they're in demanded by gardeners of all ages, from young to young at heart, for planters, making furniture and much more.
They can be turned into fencing, probably costing much less than actual fencing if you can find a shop or factory with a pile of pallets out back to dispose of, furniture, but one of the main uses in most gardens is the use of pallets for planters.
What we do is put a sheet of ground fabric on the bottom of the planter, attaching it with tacks or nails so it's secure. If you intend to paint or treat the planter's wood, now is the time to do it. Next we stand the pallet up against a wall and start filling in with compost and soil.
Fill it to the first gap off the ground and put in plants that prefer water, giving them a few weeks to settle in. Succulents are a good choice here. Next, keep filling with soil and compost, carefully, and when you reach the top, this is where you can put trailing plants and grasses.
Enjoy your garden!
